A lesson on approximating and exchanging with different worlds. Flor da Montanha is an address in the city of Nova Friburgo, located in the hinterlands of Rio de Janeiro state. It is the songs from the Africas in Brazil, an Amazonian scent in southeastern Brazil.

It is Umbanda and it is also Santo Daime. She helped Padrinho heal from a disease thanks to her knowledge of herbs, and thus started the approximation between both of their beliefs and everything they represent.

And with that in mind, she built her own way of practicing Umbanda and performing Daime works. Flor da Montanha is a reflection of this lifestyle chosen by its Spiritual Leader: with natural ease, the tent covers the celebrations in the CEFLURIS calendar, an official document that determines the saints and festivities for each day, as well as the giras.

Common ground for all rituals, the power of music echoes through the space. The Feitio is one of the main rituals at Flor da Montanha: it takes twelve hours of devotion and thorough repetition to prepare the Ayahuasca.

In order to take part in the process, one has to abstain from sexual relations, alcoholic beverages, and foods such as beef: discipline is important to ensure harmony and self-control in face of all the emotions released upon contact with the tea.

Vines and leaves are picked, men macerate the vine to the rhythm of the hymns they sing, women select and clean the leaves. Deep pots hold the vegetables that simmer for hours on end: out of the pots and into the jugs, the job is done. In the evening, the group gathers to celebrate and thank for the Daime. During Hymnals, the central doctrine hymnals are repeated by the group and dictate the pace for the dances and visions: according to the lyrics, Umbanda entities dance and meet with forest creatures and Catholic saints.

Concentration is a ceremony carried out in silence, with the purpose of meditating to allow for spiritual development: they read from the gospel and discretely sing. The healing Works offer an opportunity to pray for the sick as some possessions take place.

New hymns are often introduced in ceremony by those who receive them, by the leader's invitation. The hymns can be seen as integral to the ritual, the transformation, and the revealed messages as each person understands them. Hinarios that are central to the doctrine may be sung once or several times per year, and practiced many times more. Mestre Irineu on the Virgin of Conception Dec. Different varieties of these botanical species were transferred from the Amazon and introduced in the most diverse ecological contexts throughout the country. The Santo Daime is a Christian based religious manifestation, originated in Acre, in the beginning of the 20th Century.

One of its main symbols is the Santo Cruzeiro, which is, for some, the two-armed Cross or Caravaca Cross, and illustrates the cover of this publication. There are many different interpretations for its actual meaning. It used to be adopted by members of the Crusades, Templars and missionaries as a powerful amulet and symbol of protection.

Among the practitioners of the Daime, it is fairly common to say that the second arm of the Cross represents the return of Jesus Christ. Its founder, Raimundo Irineu Serra, the Mestre Irineu, is considered therefore a Brazilian doctrine, an intangible heritage of our culture. My personal relationship with the doctrine has begun with my father, in periods during which we lived inside the community of the Vale do Matutu, located in the Serra do Papagaio, inside the Mantiqueira environmental preservation Area, in the city of Aiuruoca, southern Minas Gerais.

Experience, however, cannot be transferred in its complete way when it comes to sensations. I had then to begin my own intense and particular journey, going through paths, building relations with people and places that keep a much more profound connection with the Daime in the Matutu.

Religare is the fruit of my days spent in that location, with an open, respectful heart, after the statement of a trustful approach, with the only intention of harmonically living the delicacy of an own time-space.
